Swimming is more than just a sport; it is a way of life that can transform us. In our newest Underwater Chats exclusive interview with Laura Vaca, an Olympian and current Masters World Champion, we discovered the deep connection she has with swimming and how the sport has shaped her life.
Laura Vaca’s Journey
Laura began her competitive career at an early age, competing at the Central American Games, Pan American Games, and two Olympic Games, reaching the finals in 1968. Today, as a Masters swimmer, she has set four world records across different age categories. Her passion for swimming continues to be a driving force in her life.
“Swimming gives me a better quality of life and supports my mental well-being. Every morning, I have a goal to work toward,” shared Laura.
Laura also shares her experience as a sports advisor and Masters coach, dedicating her time to helping others find their own path in the water. She emphasizes the importance of having clear goals: “I always think of swimming as a means to achieve a better quality of life and maintain a positive attitude.”
Preparing for the 2026 PanAm Aquatics Masters Championships
With the continental event in Buenos Aires quickly approaching, Laura has been training intensely over the past several months. Her focus is on refining her technique and maintaining her times despite the challenges that come with age.
“It’s difficult to maintain the times I achieved 20 years ago, but what matters is enjoying the process and continuing to grow,” Laura says.
She also highlights the importance of a well-rounded approach to training, including nutritional and mental support.
The Masters Swimming Community
For Laura, Masters swimming is about much more than competition—it is also about community. She is grateful for the friendships, connections, and experiences she has gained throughout her journey.
“The water is part of me. Training is a form of meditation that helps me solve problems and gain a clearer vision of what I want to achieve.”
According to Laura, swimming is a personal journey of self-discovery and growth. Her message is simple: taking part in competitive events can be a truly transformative experience.
A Message to Masters Swimmers
Laura invites Masters swimmers from across the Americas to join her at the upcoming PanAm Aquatics Masters Championships in Buenos Aires, taking place this October.
“Take the opportunity and participate—you won’t regret it. Every experience at this event is unforgettable and helps us grow as people and as athletes.”
Laura’s journey is a reminder that there is always an opportunity to keep growing, challenging ourselves, and enjoying the sport we love, regardless of age. Passion, purpose, and community keep us moving forward.
