Meaningful development begins with investing in people. Across the Americas, National Federations are strengthening aquatics in their communities through education, collaboration, and opportunities that create lasting impact. In Belize, that commitment is already making a difference.
Earlier this year, the Belize Aquatics Federation hosted a two-day Swim Camp in Belize City, bringing together young swimmers for their first experience with structured training led by World Aquatics-certified coaches. Beyond developing technical skills, the camp promoted confidence, discipline, water safety, and a sense of community while reinforcing the Federation’s vision of making aquatics more accessible to the next generation.
“This Swim Camp represents an important foundation as we continue working toward our vision of transforming lives through water,” said Giovanni Alamilla, President of the Belize Aquatics Federation. “As a National Federation, we remain focused on expanding learn-to-swim initiatives, developing talent pathways, strengthening coach education, and increasing opportunities for competition and growth.”
The initiative was further strengthened by Belizean elite swimmer Davia Richardson, a participant in the PanAm Aquatics Athlete Committee Mentorship Program, who returned to support the camp and inspire young athletes. “The swimmers’ passion was inspiring and reinforced the importance of creating more opportunities for development in Belize,” Richardson shared. “I am proud to be part of this effort and remain committed to supporting the next generation of Belizean swimmers.”
Belize’s commitment to development extends beyond the pool. Through participation in the PanAm Aquatics National Federation Certification Program, federation leaders are building the knowledge and leadership needed to create sustainable, athlete-centered systems that will strengthen aquatics for years to come.
For Marella Richardson, Secretary General of the Belize Aquatics Federation, the program has provided practical tools to help shape the Federation’s future. “The PAQ modules have strengthened both my knowledge and perspective as a leader within aquatics,” Richardson said. “They reinforced the importance of strong governance, strategic planning, and athlete-centered development while providing practical insights that we can directly apply to the ongoing growth of the Belize Aquatics Federation. Most importantly, they have reaffirmed that meaningful progress is possible when there is a clear vision, strong governance, and a commitment to our athletes.”
From educating federation leaders to expanding learn-to-swim opportunities for children, Belize continues to demonstrate how development is built one initiative at a time. Through the support of PanAm Aquatics and the dedication of local leaders, coaches, and athletes, these efforts are creating stronger pathways for participation, strengthening the national aquatic ecosystem, and opening the door for future generations to thrive in and around the water.
